Cathy Ménard

The respectable bourgeoise, cold and correct on the surface. It was the part she made her own across the French films of the early 1980s.

Cathy Ménard appeared in French adult film from the early 1980s, worked mostly for Alpha France and Video Marc Dorcel, and is counted by French retrospective writing among the most celebrated actresses of the country's Golden Age. IAFD records 52 performer credits through 1985, with a last pair of films in 1987. She died on May 1, 2022, at Levallois-Perret.

03 · About

The role she made her own

Cathy Ménard was born on June 17, 1954, in Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, and entered adult film around her mid twenties, at the start of the decade that made her name.

Her speciality was the bourgeoise: the outwardly cold, respectable woman, played with a restraint that held its own against everything the films put around her. French critics of the period singled out exactly that contrast, and the reference writing since has kept describing it the same way.

This tall young brunette, slim and classy, who at the time worked at a lawyer's office, carried all the innocence in the world in her eyes, but she was a volcano, in life and on set.

The active part of Cathy Ménard's career belongs to the first half of the 1980s. She entered at 26 or 27, at a moment when French hardcore played in dedicated 35 mm cinemas; by the time she stopped, the market was shifting to video. Her record runs from first shoots in 1980 or 1981 to a final pair of titles in 1987.

Two directors used her four times each, Gérard Kikoïne and J. Helbie. The most remembered title in her catalogue is Claude Bernard-Aubert's «L'initiation d'une femme mariée» (1983), where she played Babeth for the director's Burd Tranbaree label. Her output stayed within a tight cluster of French producers, Alpha France above all.
